Group Presentation Reflection

When asked to work in a group setting, I normally like to take the lead. Having been in the military upon other things, it has just become second nature. This year however, one of the things that I am working on is watching and taking examples on how others lead. It is such a hard thing for me to do, but being that I have more on my plate than I can chew on, I knew that it was better for my mental and emotional health to step back and be a participant and share my experiences than being the one who takes the charge.

Our group presentations had many different topics that lead to one main topic, group dynamics. We were able to experience first hand a couple of these groups, the main one being virtual meetings. I have to admit, I have never done a group project in an online setting, let alone not being able to meet my group mates in person. I thought this would be harder than it actually was.

While communication is key in every day life, it was even more important in this project. Especially when one cannot read body language. Our group leader made sure that everyone was on the right page, and assisted anyone who may feel lost or needed help. She also placed hard deadlines to ensure everyone meets the standard and achieves a good grade.

While I was not part of the other groups, their presentation showed how prepared and guided they were.  These group while divided, yet still had to work together because the topics were similar in nature.  One of the groups presented on intercultural communication, and since we live in a city with such diversity this topic is one of the most important because it teaches us the differences in cultures and helps us understand why certain cultures, and people do things in a certain manner.

The other group spoke about problem solving, and group leadership. They presented about specific roles such as procedural and maintenance roles. This group discussed topics about committing to a goal that works for the group, ensuring that communication and the discussions were pertaining to the topic, being responsible to meeting target deadlines, and receiving feedback from the members of the group which allows better communication in within the group.

What I enjoyed about this project was that the diversity on the presentation was unique, everyone had something different to presents and everyone had a different presentation style which worked perfectly with the topics we were already presenting. If anything this reassured the topics we were all presenting.

This makes me look forward to other presentations and see how we, as a group can grow by using the material we have learned.
